BrooksLooks @ Home is Where You Are

HOME IS WHERE YOU ARE

HOME WAS WHERE MY MOTHER WAS
NOT EXACTLY HOME ON THE RANGE
THE RANGE WAS WHERE DINNER CAME FROM
AND EATING OUT WAS RATHER STRANGE

BUT HOME SINCE THEN HAS MOVED ABOUT
FROM DORM TO APARTMENT TO ROOM
IT DIDN’T SEEM TO MATTER THEN
UNTIL LIFE BEGAN TO BLOOM

APARTMENT LIFE A SLOW PASSING PHASE
IN SIMPLER TIMES OF OVERDRAFT DAYS
BUT I GOT A JOB AND RENTED A HOUSE
LEARNED ABOUT WATER HEATERS
AND BUYING TRAPS TO CATCH A MOUSE

A CAREER WOULD BRING US HITHER AND YON TO ONE HOUSE AFTER ANOTHER
WE LIVED IN PLACES WE NEVER DREAMED UP
A PLACE OR TWO WE SHOULDN’T HAVE BOTHERED

YEARS WENT BY AND MOTHER MOVED
RETIRING SOUTH FOR THE WEATHER
HER HOME MOVED ON TO CAROLINA
THOUGH WE WERE SADLY SELDOM TOGETHER

HAPPILY IT PASSED FROM MOM TO SPOUSE
CAN’T SAY WHEN YOU KNOW HOW LIFE IS
HOUSES SOMETIMES RESEMBLED HOMES
NOW MY HOME IS WHERE MY WIFE IS

ODD OUR LATEST HOUSE IS NOT QUITE HOME
BUT TO ME IT’S CRYSTAL CLEAR
FROM NOW ON IT WILL NEVER BE SO
AS LONG AS YOU’RE WITH ME HERE

TIME’S GONE BY AND THINGS SURE CHANGE
SINCE WE’VE LIVED ON THE OPEN RANGE
THE KITCHEN IS MORE OFTEN COLD
AND EATING OUT’S A LOT LESS STRANGE
